It was around 1982—give or take a little—and Paris, Arkansas was doing what small towns do best: quietly going about its day. I was just a kid at the time, but there’s one moment I’ll never forget.
You see, Bill Clinton had just lost the Arkansas governorship to Frank White. Most politicians might’ve gone quiet after a defeat like that, but not him. He hit the road—town to town, face to face, doing what he did best: connecting with people. And on that particular day, he came to Paris.
Not Paris, France.
Not Paris, Texas.
Paris, Arkansas.
The heart of Logan County—and my hometown.
He came right into the store where my mom and I were shopping. No entourage, no podium. Just Bill. I remember how easily he talked with everyone around him, like he’d known them all his life. Even as a kid, I noticed something about him—though I wouldn’t have known the word “charisma” back then. I just knew he had it.
Then he saw me.
I wore my hair long at the time, always braided. That day, I had two French braids down my back, pinned with beaded bobby pins crisscrossed in neat rows—my go-to look. And he noticed.
He smiled and said, “That’s so pretty.”
Then added, “My little girl doesn’t have enough hair for that yet.”
(He was talking about Chelsea, who would’ve been about two years old at the time.)
It was a small moment. A gentle one. But it stuck. And every time I come across Clinton-Gore memorabilia, I think of that day.
